Good Effort
When we quit our gym a while back, I went out and bought a balance ball so we could work out at home instead of spending $60 a month. That was about four months ago and the only times I’ve brought it out was to terrorize the dog with it. Finally, last night I got out the balance ball and popped in the DVD that it came with and decided to try the 20 minute lower body workout. Yeah, couldn’t even make it through the workout. I mean, I was winded after the warm-up routine! Sad, I know. I wonder, though, if starting my workout at 10:30 at night had something to do with my commitment. So many variables…nah, it’s just my laziness.
St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival 2008!

We had been preparing for this weekend for many months. May 10th marked the Second Annual St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival at Forest Park. Last year’s event was quite a good time and we were looking forward to the second one for an entire year.

Unfortunately, the weather did not have this date marked on its calendar. It had been raining all week here in lovely St. Louis, and that pattern continued through the weekend. Fortunately, they had tents out and mulch down to keep the revelers covered and out of the mud, for the most part. It was raining very hard for a good chunk of the evening, but right before the beer was set to flow, the rain stopped and out came a rainbow:

A good sign to be sure! We made our way through the tents, sampling the beers and buying dinner at the food tent for our sober drivers – Jen and Beth. Katie came along for the fun, but didn’t partake in the beer. The beers were great, and while we didn’t stay as late as we did last year (mostly due to the weather and crowds), we had a good time!

In addition, we have determined that this qualifies for the STL101 project:
17. Pick at least one ritual of your own in this festival-rich city: Mardi Gras in Soulard, the St. Paddy’s Day Parade in Dogtown, Fair St. Louis, one of the Greek festivals, the Festival of Nations, the Polish Festival at the Polish Falcons Gardens, the French festivals in Ste. Genevieve, the Thanksgiving Day Parade downtown…
So that’s one more checked off the list!
Supper Club: May 7, 2008

Entree: Classic Italian Spaghetti and Meatballs Tasty dish and very easy to make. We ended up doubling the recipe and made the meatballs smaller which worked out much better.
Side Dishes: Broccoli with Toasted Garlic
Garlic Bread
1 Loaf of Crusty Bread (Italian, Sourdough, etc.)
Minced Garlic
Parmesan Cheese
Butter
Slice Bread into 1 inch slices. Slather with butter and garlic. Top with parmesan cheese and broil until golden brown.
Two simple dishes that complemented the entree.

Dessert: Easy Peanut Butter and Chocolate Eclair Light dessert that required no baking. Instead of using the recipe for the chocolate topping, I just melted 6 squares of Baker’s semi-sweet chocolate with a tub of Cool Whip in the microwave and spread over the graham crackers.
Green Thumb…Not So Much

Meet Farmer Bob and Farmer Jen. They live on the untamed lands of unincorporated St. Louis.

This is their trusty hunting dog, Kuma, a fierce, attentive canine who will chase any man or beast away from the homestead.
You see, Farmer Bob and Farmer Jen aren’t really farmers. They just like to call themselves that because they wanted to put their heads on the American Gothic painting. All was content until Farmer Bob caught an episode of Landscape Smart on the magic talking box and got this crazy idea to plant a garden. So now, Farmer Bob and Farmer Jen must live up to their names and live off the land. Here is their vegetable and herb garden:

Let’s hope that Farmer Bob and Farmer Jen can succeed in this endeavor or else they will starve to death.
