The Merry Wives of Windsor

58. The Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis in Forest Park. This theater company customarily stages free outdoor productions by the Bard to great acclaim, so pack a blanket or lawn chair now. This year, near nightly for the better part of a month starting May 21, plumb the darkest depths of villainy in Richard III.

How cool is St. Louis that they have a free Shakespeare Festival every year in Forest Park? I say, very cool. This year we finally attended because I was actually willing to see a comedy and not some tragedy or historical play. The evening was beautiful, we had an awesome spread of food in front of us and it was Friday, a great start to the weekend. We even had a prime spot, where we could see the stage until this happened:

And this:

I would like to introduce you to Dumbass Couple #1 and Dumbass Couple #2. They actually looked back at us, saw that we were sitting on blankets and proceeded to put their chairs up right there. Yep, that was the view that I had of the stage after they sat down. So, I ended up listening to most of the play, with a few peeks in between the chairs. If it wasn’t such fabulous weather and my belly wasn’t full of yummy cheese, I would have been in a much grumpier mood. I just laid back and enjoyed the stars.

I must say, it was a fun experience but I don’t think I will do it again unless the Festival bans the use of lawn chairs or has a designated area for them because they really can ruin someone’s evening.

Supper Club: June 3, 2009

Appetizer: Creamy Pesto Dip. A cool, refreshing dip that went wonderfully with baguette chips. I do enjoy a dip that’s not very loaded with ingredients, this dip is simple yet full of flavor. And it tastes better a couple of days later, when the ingredients had even more time to infuse into the sour cream.

Entree: Garlic and Onion Burgers. Okay, 1.5 pounds of meat is more than enough for feeding a group of 5. It was a solid hamburger recipe. Since Bob went to the Cardinals game, I cooked the burgers on the Foreman Grill and they turned out fine.

Side Dish: Cajun Sweet Potato Fries. I LOVE sweet potato fries! This was a healthy alternative to the fried version and I liked the sweet-spicy combination.

Dessert: Smore Truffles. Decadent, delectable, devoured! I will be putting this recipe in my Christmas cookie tin rotation. I probably could have eaten a dozen of those but I had to stop myself after two or else I would make myself sick with how rich it was.

When the Guys are Out, The Girls Will Play

Did you really expect the girls to sit at home while the boys are gallivanting around St. Louis in a drunken stupor? HELL NO! Amanda, the bride-to-be, gathered a group of us and headed down to the Sugar Creek Winery to enjoy the fabulous weather (it did look a little dicey in the morning but thank goodness it cleared up), the wonderful food and the fantastic wine. We spent about 3 1/2 hours down there just eating, drinking and talking. The only incident that marred the day was a fortyish-year-old woman who did not know when to stop the wine inhalation and was passed out on the table for a while. Then, the inevitable happened. I did not see it but Amanda did and I’ve never seen her move so fast to get away from the table. At least it was at the end of the day so thank goodness for small favors.

Of course the day did not end there. We had to include a chick flick in the mix and then karaoke at the Gashouse Grill. I really thought that when they said “Let’s go to Gashouse. They have karaoke tonight.” it meant hang out and listen to other people sing. Oh no! It meant that we had to sing. Geez. And I did not have the luxury of being buzzed when singing.

Girls’ Day Out is too much fun! We must have more of these in the future!

Mini-Vacation with the Marcantels

We were invited by the Marcantels to spend a couple of days down in Cape Coral, FL at their fabulous condo and of course, we took them up on their offer. And it was wonderful! Now, Bob and I were really only there for 2 full days but it was what we needed. Lounging by the pool on Monday (and getting burned in a random pattern, I really do not like the spray sunscreen) and shopping all day on Tuesday at the outlet mall. What more could I ask for?

How can you be down in Florida and not go to DisneyWorld? That’s exactly what Krissy and Kenny thought so we drove up to Orlando Tuesday night so they could spend a couple of days there and we flew home from there.

Marcantels, thank you so much for inviting us down to Florida and letting us hang out with you! We must do it again!
