Floating and Camping at the Bass River Resort

Since we had so much fun last year, we had to rally the troops and head down to Southern Missouri again this year for a float trip. But we decided to kick it up a notch this year and (gasp!) camp down there afterward! Yeah, okay, so the last time I went camping was a little over 10 years ago and it was not a pretty sight. Let’s just say I ended up sleeping in the car while our stuff and tent was flooded. No fun. I sucked it up this year, though, and decided that I could try this again.

The boys actually went down to the Bass River Resort Friday night to set up camp (the girls were not going to be roughing it two nights) and do some male bonding, aka, drinking and talking politics. Really, guys, you talked politics while drinking, with none of your lady friends around? Now that is a party crowd. Don’t you want to hang out with these guys on a Friday night? Just kidding, we love you guys.

Then, the real party started when the girls packed up the cars and drove down. Let’s see, you know you’re in Hoosierville when you get pulled over for TINTED WINDOWS! Yep, that’s right, my girl, Stephanie, got pulled over because the cop saw her car and pulled her over. We weren’t going over the speed limit and so he needed some bullshit excuse to write a ticket. I seriously think that he thought it was a bunch of hoodlums in this car, not four women, if you know what I mean. Thank goodness, no ticket, but he even pulled out the tint-reader. Really, was that necessary? After that little incident, we made it to the campsite without any other troubles.

The weather was absolutely PERFECT for a day on the Huzzah River. The sun was shining brightly, there was only a slight breeze and the water felt fantastic when you got too warm lounging in the raft. Of course, we had the usual fares of beer, beer and more beer and enough food to feed a small army. So, if you guys don’t ever want to starve, just stick with us, you never will. We also had spiked Gatorades and “juice boxes” because jello shots are illegal on the river.

My complaint though was that I felt like I was dragging the raft more than actually floating in it because the water was low this year due to lack of rain (really, lack of rain? I swear I thought it was raining once a week for a while there). Well, whatever, either way, we eventually made it downriver. Now usually, I would have a lot more pictures because you know me, photo queen, but the river gods demanded a sacrifice and unfortunately, we couldn’t drown one of our friends (even though a certain someone scared us to death by trying).

So good-bye camera, you did so well for us. We will miss you and rest in peace.

Once we got back to the campsite and showered (I felt so much better after that), we all sat around the campfire and ate dinner and talked. Did you know that there are stars at night? As I sat in a chair, outside, not being eaten by mosquitoes because of the bug spray and 8 citronella candles, I quietly enjoyed the night sky and fire. I could totally get used to this. So, now, I can see why people enjoy camping, communing with nature, enjoying the quietness. Of course, we were in the “loud” campsite and we had music blaring around us and crazy drunk people, yelling and screaming, not exactly ideal for communing but I could imagine it. Being in the “loud” campsite does hinder a good night’s sleep (all the girls did not get any sleep at all but all the guys seemed to be just fine) so I got to see the sun rise after about 2 hours of restless sleep. But, in spite of lack of sleep and feeling like a truck ran me over, I had a great time with these guys. Totally worth the camera and sleep sacrifice.

Supper Club: August 12, 2009

Appetizer: Pizzette with Gorgonzola, Tomato and Basil. Fabulous little pizza appetizers that are super-easy to make! The only suggestion would be to spray the cookie sheet first, but that’s it.

Entree: Bourbon Chicken. This was a very easy and delicious chicken recipe that you will enjoy. My only problem was that I had too much chicken in my pan so it didn’t really brown and the sauce could have been slightly thicker (I just got too impatient). But it was good, nonetheless.

Side Dish: Warm Sesame Spinach. Straightforward spinach recipe with a little bit of tang due to the the vinegar. And the spinach went well swirled in the bourbon sauce.

Dessert: Oreo Truffles. The recipe called for strawberry milkshake Oreos but Kim went ahead with the chocolate Oreos and mint Oreos. Both were delicious but I was more of a fan of the mint truffle (the chocolate truffle seemed a little too much chocolate for me). I’d be curious on how the strawberry ones would taste now.

Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Liang

What? That’s not right! Eric is too young to get married! He’s still eight-years-old, small, skinny with the biggest, hardest head in the world. He’s still ramming us with that ginormous noggin any time we tease him or piss him off. He still has his hands up and rolling his hips as he’s saying “Ravishing Rick Rude.” He’s not supposed to old enough to own his own home, let alone say “I do.” Sigh, where has the time gone? Well, at least he’s grown into his head.

In celebration of the nuptials of Eric and Melissa, a bunch of us went out to Las Palmas for dinner Friday night. Cathy was needing her Las Palmas fix and we were happy to oblige. The groom and best man showed up as well and we pretty much took over the restaurant, if not physically, but vocally. When you get this particular group of friends together, we sure can turn up the volume. After dinner, we headed over to the house to help with last minute wedding things, like the programs and seating chart. Yep, that’s right, we had to clean up the seating chart due to some mistakes and create a wedding program. But it was fun, sitting around and hanging out with the Liang family, they are always a good time. So, really, we were there for moral support.

Saturday morning, for us, was spent by the pool, soaking up some rays, just biding our time until the wedding. We then picked up my mom and headed to the church. We were a bit worried when we didn’t see Cathy and Sam with the rest of the family. They were running errands all day and still running them right up until wedding time. Everyone was seated, the parents were seated and they come sneaking in as the first couple in the wedding party walked down the aisle. Talk about cutting it close! The bride and groom even performed the sand ceremony! Twice, in one year, I wonder if it’s the new “unity candle.”

The reception was held at The Landings at Spirit Golf Club, which was located in the middle of nowhere Chesterfield. It was a bit interesting getting there but now that we know it’s there, Bob will be wanting to explore that golf course soon. There were appetizers of fruit, vegetable tempura and toasted ravioli and so of course, I gorged on that to the point where I could barely eat dinner. Whoops. I got to catch up with people that I hadn’t seen in years and be entertained by one of my friend’s two-year-old boy as he busted out his dance moves. He was too cute.

Congratulations, Eric and Melissa, may you have many wonderful and happy years together!

Supper Club: August 5, 2009

This week is Downtown Restaurant Week in St. Louis. This is pretty cool, a bunch of restaurants are offering three course menus for only $25. Since Kim brought this to our attention we thought she should do the honors of choosing the restaurant: Kitchen K. Here was the whole menu but I’ll be focusing on what I ordered with brief mentions of what Kim, Kate and Bob ordered.

Appetizer: Tempura Battered Coconut Shrimp. I was a little disappointed with this dish and here’s why. When we walked up to the restaurant, we saw this woman with this plate of three large pieces of shrimp, entirely coated with batter like this:

(Thank you, stickygooeychef for the photo.)

It looked wonderful. What I got instead was three tiny shrimp laying on a plate with barely any batter on it. So not what the woman had outside. It was as if the chef got too lazy or ran out of the good shrimp. I tasted Bob’s Lobster Bisque. It was adequate, a little bland. I would agree with Bob in that Trailhead does have a much better bisque.

Entree: Wild Alaskan Salmon Piccata. If you like piccata, then you would be wise to choose this dish. The salmon and green beans were cooked well. The mashed potatoes were your normal mashed potatoes (they tasted even better when you swirl them in the lemon butter sauce). It was a good dish, nothing fancy at all. Bob and Kate ordered the scallops and they were excellent, especially the wasabi mashed potatoes. The wasabi was not overwhelming at all, you only get a whiff of it at the end of your bite.

Dessert: Peanut Butter Pie. Delicious dessert, a perfect balance of chocolate and peanut butter. I would say all the desserts were delicious. Bob, of course, got the carrot cake, and Kim got the chocolate ecstasy. I always worry about flourless cakes because I’ve had ones that were on the dry side but this one had more of a dense cheesecake consistency and it lived up to its name.

This is a perfect opportunity for you to try a new restaurant at reasonable price and I would suggest that you guys, if you can, take advantage of this. Kitchen K is a solid restaurant, it doesn’t wow you with new and interesting flavors and you won’t walk out going “This is the best food I’ve ever had” but you do leave satisfied. I do have to warn you, though, the service is little to be desired. We had people sit down after us and served before we were and we also had to wait longer than needed to pay our bill. But maybe our waitress had an off night, who knows.

Kuma Turns 6!

Birthdays don’t really mean much to dogs. Maybe Kuma remembers that she gets special treats every year on this day, but probably not. Either way, we totally made her balance a lit pupcake on her head this year. Hey, it’s better than that pointy birthday hat.

Happy birthday, Kuma! Thanks for not burning down our house!
