Supper Club: Olympia Kebab House

This week, Kate decided to go out to eat and chose Olympia Kebab House because she was feeling Greek that day, which is weird since she doesn’t have an ounce of Greek blood in her (tee-hee, I made a funny). She thought to visit one of her old haunts from back in the day, throw in a bit of nostalgia with Supper Club.

When you go for Greek food, you have to have the saganaki (flaming cheese). I mean, really, they light the cheese on fire and yell “Opa!” The cheese is good, but you really order it for the show. I also ordered the spanakopita (spinach pitas) as an appetizer. There was a bit more spinach than I was expecting but since I’m a fan of spinach, it was good.

For an entree, Bob ordered the dolmades and I ordered the moussaka. Both were delicious but I was a bit surprised that I actually saw them nuke our dishes in the microwaves. I know that most restaurants use the microwave but still, I don’t want to see it. Not that our dinners were terrible, it just took some of the mystique out of it. Everyone enjoyed their dishes as well, which included chicken kebabs and gyros.

The service wasn’t too bad either but it wasn’t the most attentive. That won’t put me off from coming back again, though. Don’t be expecting a high-falutin’ atmosphere: Olympia is a typical neighborhood joint with a Greek twist. Tasty and honest.

A Weekend of Gluttony

Two weekends ago was a bad weekend if you were on a diet because it flew right out of the window. We started the weekend by having my firm’s holiday luncheon at Pomme Restaurant. I enjoy these lunches because I wouldn’t be able to eat such decadent food on my own. The fish was fantastic but the short ribs were to die for! They were so tender, you didn’t even need a knife to cut into it. And the sauce…the sauce! Yeah, I was uncouth and swirled my bread to sop it up.

On Saturday, we then had lunch at Cardwell’s in Frontenac, where they have this great stir-fry. I know it’s weird, but I do love the bread they serve, I could probably eat an entire basket of it myself. Fried calamari was ordered and it was great. Light, non-greasy and the chipotle dip and a nice splash of heat to it. I ended up with the stir-fry and Bob had the smoked salmon sandwich. Everything was great but I do have to say, I was a bit disappointed with the fries. It tasted like it had freezer burn on it and they still threw it in the fryer. Not so good.

The piece de resistance came Sunday afternoon with Sunday brunch at the Ritz-Carlton. Oh, heavenly. They dedicated the front of the entrance to the dining room for desserts. That’s a lot of desserts! There was sushi, salads, breakfast foods, eggs benedict (my favorite), prime rib (so excellent), soups, rolls, etc. I ate so much there, I had a food baby stuck under my ribs. That delicious! I do enjoy going there for brunch.

So much food, so little stomach space. Yep, that’s one of the perks of my job…consuming millions of calories in a weekend.

Supper Club: December 9, 2009

Appetizer: Artichoke and Red Pepper Pizza. A fantastic appetizer to start off the meal. I have been on an artichoke kick lately and this was delish. The only complaint I had was that the bottom of the pizza, towards the middle, did not brown like I’m accustomed to. I wonder if that had anything to do with not using a pizza stone.

Entree: Angel Hair with Scallops in White Wine Butter. Because Katie could not make it, Kim opted for a seafood dish. Such a generous person, she bought the biggest scallops I had ever seen! The pasta had such a light flavor, it didn’t overwhelm the scallops and the wilted spinach gave the dish some nice texture. It was a great dinner.

Dessert: Carrot Cake with Toasted Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting. In honor of Bob’s birthday, Kate chose his favorite cake, carrot cake. Moist, flavorful, amazing, even slightly healthier for you, this cake is replacing my other carrot cake recipe. Note on the frosting, Kate doubled the cream cheese and butter but left the rest of ingredient measurements the same. She didn’t want the frosting too sweet and I agree with that.

Ride I-64, Part Deux

Regular readers will note that around this time last year, we got to ride our bikes on the soon-to-be opened portion of Highway 40 / I-64. Now, with the second phase of the project opening tomorrow, Yao, Sheena, Kenny, Jen and I were afforded the same opportunity on the stretch from Hanley Rd. to Kingshighway. Overcast again, it was quite a bit colder and windier today, but once we got on the road, we warmed up significantly.

The ride from Hanley to Kingshighway and back was a pretty easy one. Maybe 5 miles each way, there were hills, but it wasn’t too strenuous. Plus, when else can you get a view of the highway from up close on a bike? Regarding the highway itself, it looked great. It is much straighter and more level than the previous one, and the interchanges look like they were given the proper amount of thought. This ought to make my commute a lot nicer.

Afterwards, we got Spicy Beef Noodle Stew at Shu Feng in U. City, one of Yao and Sheena’s favorite places. Hella tasty! We’ll definitely be going back there.
