Supper Club: March 24, 2010

Appetizer: Artichoke and Fennel Caponata. How funny, Kate picked this dish exactly one year ago. And I still like it. The only thing that she did differently is that this time around, she bought pre-sliced toasted rounds. I guess she was lazier this year.

Entree: Black and Boursin Burgers. Good, solid burgers. They were flavorful and I loved the soft cheese oozing from the sides. Don’t be afraid of the black peppercorns, the pepper flavor is not overwhelming at all. And although it told you to smash whole peppercorns, using a pepper grinder saves you time and energy.

Side Dishes: Salt and Vinegar Broiled Fingerling Potatoes. If you are a huge fan of salt and vinegar chips, then this is a poor substitute. Don’t get me wrong, I do love vinegar but I thought it was too much in this dish. And I was expecting more of a crunch like a chip and that did not happen. Also, when you cook that much vinegar, it permeates your clothes and skin.

Greens with Creamy Berry Dressing. This was a good salad, if you like fruit in salads. I was a bit put off by the dressing because it was a sickly-looking color and was chunky due to the cranberries. It tasted delicious, though, slightly sweet. You definitely should serve this salad tossed in the dressing and not served on the side.

Dessert: Mississippi Mud Cake. This dessert name aptly describes the cake because it didn’t set up as written in the recipe so it was a bit muddy in consistency. Be sure you have a tall glass of milk when eating this cake, whew, sweetness. If you decide to make this dessert, a suggestion would be to cut the frosting down.

Ladies Night

Another year, another NCAA Tourney. So, of course, the ladies decided to go out and have some fun while the men are preoccupied (glued to the TV or setting things on fire, whatever men do). This year, we decided to try Roxanne. Amanda had heard about this little room above with pillows and we were all for it. Pros: it was sheltered from the loud crowd and attentive service. Cons: cramped with 6 girls and you’re sitting on the floor. I do have to say, it was a bit cozy but not too bad. Next time, less people in the room.

While we were in the room, the service was excellent, drinks were refilled, orders were taken quickly. Once we left the room and sat out in the dining area (another lady joined us and no way in hell were we going to fit 7 in that space), the service quickly went downhill. Our waitress pretty much disappeared and we had to constantly flag down other waitresses in order to get served drinks.

I ordered the goat cheese and mushroom pizza and really thought they were a bit heavy-handed with the mushrooms and not enough goat cheese. The girls who ordered the tuna special raved about it, the Thai calamari was delicious and there were no complaints about the Italian sausage pizza. So, I would say that overall, the food was good, but it may not be good enough for me to go back due to the poor service.

I can’t wait until next year to see where we go to next!
